What is a hangover, scientifically speaking?

A hangover is a group of unpleasant symptoms that can occur after drinking too much alcohol. While each person reacts differently,  the most common symptoms of a hangover include headache, nausea, thirst, dizziness, fatigue, and muscle aches.

The main cause of a hangover is the presence of acetaldehyde, a toxic chemical that is produced when the body breaks down alcohol. Acetaldehyde is toxic to the body and is the culprit behind many of the worst symptoms. Dehydration also contributes to hangovers, which can be caused by the diuretic effects of alcohol. Drinking alcohol causes the body to lose fluids.

It gets worse: there are even more reasons that you feel terrible after drinking. That includes the presence of impurities in the alcohol, the amount of alcohol consumed, and individual differences in how the body processes alcohol. Some people are more prone to hangovers than others, and certain types of alcohol may be more likely to cause hangovers.

Preventing a hangover

The easiest way to ensure you won’t be hungover is to of course not drink. But, if you want to do the best you can to stave off a hangover, follow these tips:

  1. Drink in moderation. This is the most effective way to prevent a hangover. The more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to experience a hangover.

  2. Stay hydrated. Alcohol can cause dehydration, so it’s important to drink plenty of water while you’re drinking and after you’re done consuming alcohol.

  3. Eat before you drink. Having food in your stomach can help slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream.

  4. Avoid mixing different types of alcohol. Mixing different types of alcohol can increase the severity and intensity of a hangover.

  5. Choose clear drinks. Darker drinks, such as red wine and whiskey, contain chemicals called congeners, which may contribute to a worse hangover.

  6. Get enough sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep can help your body recover from the effects of alcohol.

The short of it: it is best to drink alcohol in moderation, stay hydrated by drinking water or other non-alcoholic beverages, and avoid drinking on an empty stomach. It may also be helpful to choose high-quality alcoholic beverages that are free of impurities.

Treating a hangover

Some of us don’t intend to get a hangover, but it’s all too easy for one drink to turn into a couple when you’re having a good time. Here are a few things you can do to help yourself post-party:

  1. Drink plenty of fluids. Alcohol can dehydrate your body, so it’s important to replenish fluids. Water and coconut water can help rehydrate your body and replace electrolytes.

  2. Eat something. A small amount of food, especially something that is high in carbohydrates, can help to settle your stomach and boost your energy levels.

  3. Get some rest. Try to get some sleep or at least rest as much as possible. This can help your body to recover and feel more refreshed. Do not skip meals. It is important to eat something, even if you don’t feel like it, to help replenish your body’s nutrients and energy.

  4. Take over-the-counter pain medication. Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) can help to relieve headache pain. However, avoid taking ibuprofen or aspirin, as they can irritate the stomach and worsen your hangover. Make sure you take any pain reliever with food. These medications can irritate your stomach lining and cause further nausea and vomiting.

  5. Avoid alcohol. Spoiler alert, there is no such thing as hair of the dog. It will only make it worse. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it will continue to dehydrate you and exacerbate your hangover symptoms. This means no boozy brunch. The best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink alcohol.

  6. Avoid caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that can further dehydrate you and make your hangover symptoms worse. Yes, that means no coffee.

  7. Do not exercise or engage in physical activity. Your body is already feeling the effects of alcohol, and exercising will only add to your fatigue and muscle aches. Stay out of the sauna as well.
